Hi, I’m Jason. The photo above shows my graduation after finishing the Police Dog Handlers course with the RAAF—I was clearly very young back then! Dog training has always played a big role in my life, starting from when I was just six years old. My mum likes to remind me of how I used to take my dog Rusty out and teach him tricks at that age. As people say: “Turn your hobby into your job, and you’ll never work another day in your life.” That is exactly what I’ve done.
Dogs have been a constant presence in my life, and my enthusiasm for training them evolved into a professional career. I served as a Military Police dog handler in the Australian Army, and after leaving, I established my own dog training business in Port Macquarie. I offered group classes, private sessions, and board-and-train programs there for several years. Later, I moved to Sydney and worked as a Quarantine detector dog handler at Sydney Airport. After that role, I returned to Port Macquarie to continue my work as a professional dog trainer.
The range of jobs I’ve held has equipped me with valuable experience and skills. I’m able to handle a variety of dog temperaments and have developed a wide array of training techniques.
What temperaments do I deal with?
Simply put, I work with every type. Many clients seek advice on managing reactive dogs, aiming to help them become well-adjusted members of the community. Thanks to my background as a Military Police Dog Handler, I’m confident handling all temperaments—including pronounced reactivity and aggression. Understanding the origin of aggressive behaviour allows us to create effective management plans.
What sets my training apart?
My approach is unique because I communicate with dogs in ways they truly comprehend and respond to. While there are many methods trainers use, some aren’t very practical outside controlled settings. The goal when training a dog should always be to use the least force possible and use maximize positive reinforcement. However, using this method and relying solely on treats can be limiting, especially when food motivation fades. Building a genuine bond with your dog encourages cooperation without depending on rewards. I tailor my training techniques to suit each individual dog and their specific needs, since no single method works for all. It is vital owners learn realistic methods that will work in all environments.
